Capture the Flag Categories
As you explore the clues that have been left behind by some unknown adversarial hacker, be sure to familiarize yourself with the different categories of concepts that hacker may have used. Please note that some of these categories coexist. You may use their referencing emojis to determine what category is implemented with each challenge.
Challenge Categories:
- 🌽Cryptography: Crack codes, decipher hidden messages, and unlock the secrets within!
- 🌻Forensics: Analyze digital evidence, uncover hidden clues, and piece together the puzzles. This category includes Steganography, where you may be tasked with hunting for hidden messages and decoding secret codes from them.
- 🕸️Web Exploitation: Navigate the web like a pro, exploit vulnerabilities, and claim your digital bounty.
- 🐔Programming: Focus on the concepts more than the programming languages and you may find success in determining what the languages are saying.
- 🐄Misc: Think outside the box, solve creative puzzles, and test your overall problem solving skillset in these "moo-scellaneous" challenges.
- 👩🌾Intro: These challenges are really to help get an idea of what a CTF is.
- 🥕Networking: Focus on communication and how it may be interpreted more on the technical level. How do computers communicate with each other? What does that look like?
- 🍎Trivia: Do some research, if you need to... but provide a correct answer and get rewarded!
- 🚜Physical: These challenges exist in the space around you. When you see these challenges, be sure to move a bit and look around!
- 🍉Reverse Engineering: Want to know how most people hack other people's programs? This category requires you to investigate programs that were written in code, obfuscated in that code, and then given to you as a program to run! Can you make sense of the program's inner workings and peel back the layers to see the algorithms hidden underneath?
